Room history
There aren’t any records of the early history of the castle. The first written record originates from 1219. In these documents we can read about this place once being a spital of the knights of St. John. Some sources state that they were the people who built the predecessor of the castle. The shelter could have functioned as a fortress since we know that the knights of St. John were an outstanding part in the crusade. They took part in the pilgrimages and campaigns of the holy land, and then returned to Hungary where they started operating. The castle and the partly unexplored cellar system below it belonged to them for about 300 years. The Johannita Suite is for the honour of the Order.
