There are no records on the early history of the mansion. The first written records are from 1219. The documents say that the hospital of the knights of St. John used to stand at this place. According to some sources, these knights built the predecessor of the mansion. This shelter may have served as a kind of fortress, as we know that the knights of St. John played important roles in the crusades. They participated in pilgrimages and campaigns in the Holy Land, then returned to Hungary, and kept working here. They controlled this property for about 300 years, together with the still partly unexplored cellar system under the mansion. The Johannita Suite is a tribute to the Order.
